Fire ants, subterranean termites, mosquitoes, summer scorpions and lawn insects top the list for DeSoto homeowners, since most houses sit on slabs over shifting Blackland clay with lawns all around. DeSoto lies directly south of Red Bird and Duncanville, about 8 km from the 75237 base of Dallas Pest Control, and same-day service is available when a technician is free.
DeSoto is a separate city in southern Dallas County, home to 56,145 people at the 2020 census. Settlers arrived in 1847, which makes it one of the oldest communities in North Texas. The name came with the 1881 post office and honors Dr. Thomas Hernando DeSoto Stewart, a local doctor.
In March 1949 residents voted 50 to 2 to incorporate, mostly to fix a water system that could not keep up, and the Dallas County Commissioners Court entered the result on March 3. Most of the city's homes came in later decades as slab-on-grade subdivisions, though age and build vary from street to street. Residential mail uses ZIP 75115.
I-35E runs south past DeSoto toward Glenn Heights, Lancaster lies to the east, and the Cedar Hill escarpment rises to the west. That mix of freeway corridor, suburban lawns and nearby hills is what sets the pest calendar here.

Red imported fire ants recolonize treated lawns from neighboring yards, medians and empty lots, so drenching a single mound rarely lasts in DeSoto. Colonies build fresh mounds within days of a soaking rain in spring and fall. A yard-wide bait applied twice a year usually works far better than chasing mounds one at a time.
Texas A&M AgriLife calls this the Two-Step Method. First, broadcast bait across the whole lawn so foraging workers carry it back to the queens. Second, treat mounds where people walk or play, like those near a trampoline, sandbox or back step.
A fire ant yard treatment (typical lot) is estimated at $115–$300 and confirmed before treatment; bigger lots and heavy infestations cost more. The fire ant control page covers timing around spring and fall rains.
Stay calm and save a few. Swarmers cannot bite or chew wood, and indoors they usually die within a day. Vacuum the rest, seal a handful in a bag or jar for identification and note the room and time. Then book an inspection, because a swarm inside means a mature colony is feeding near or under the house.
Timing tells you something. Eastern subterranean termites swarm in daylight, mostly from late February through May, usually on a warm day after rain. Formosan termites, reported in Dallas County, swarm at dusk from about late April into June and gather at lights. Store-bought spray kills the visible swarmers and leaves the colony untouched.
A liquid termite treatment (typical slab home; pier-and-beam homes quoted after inspection) is estimated at $1,200–$3,000. A Formosan termite treatment (only if an inspection confirms Formosans; quoted after inspection) is estimated at $1,500–$4,500. Which one applies, if either, depends on what the inspection finds.
It is the cheapest moment to protect a building. Before a builder pours a new slab for a house, addition, garage or shop, the soil underneath can be treated so termites meet a barrier from the first day. Once the concrete is down, the same protection costs more and needs drilling or trenching around the slab.
Pre-construction termite treatment (new slab) is estimated at $400–$1,200, depending on the footprint. The treatment goes down after grading and plumbing are in and before the vapor barrier and the pour, so ask your builder to schedule pre-construction termite treatment with a few days' notice.
Keep the paperwork. A written record of the pre-treatment, with the date and the product used, is useful when the house is sold or when a later inspection asks what protection the slab already has.
From June through September, heat and drought send striped bark scorpions and American cockroaches looking for cool, damp spots indoors, and crickets start crowding porch lights by late August. Dry weather also opens cracks in the clay along foundations, giving all three a path to the slab edge and the gap under the door.
Scorpions are most common where yards back onto brush, rock or leftover building debris. American roaches tend to arrive through garage doors and plumbing gaps. Keep firewood and stacked pavers off the foundation and trim shrubs back from the brick, since both give summer pests cover on the way in. A spider or scorpion treatment (scorpions usually need a follow-up visit) is estimated at $150–$325.
Lawns suffer too. Chinch bugs show up in hot, sunny patches of St. Augustine, grubs eat roots under brown spots, and armyworms can strip turf quickly in late summer. Lawn insect treatment (grubs, chinch bugs, armyworms; per visit) is estimated at $80–$160.

Check the City of DeSoto's own notices, since DeSoto is a separate city from Dallas. Dallas County Health and Human Services reports positive mosquito pools and West Nile cases countywide. For your own yard, mosquito control (per visit, in season, typical city lot) is estimated at $65–$120.
Yes. Offices, shops, restaurants and other businesses can set up a commercial pest plan (per month), estimated at $85–$275 depending on size and use. Each visit ends with a written report of what was found and applied.
Not always. Outdoor work such as fire ant baiting or a perimeter spray can often be done with the gate unlocked and pets kept inside, after you approve the price by phone. Indoor work needs an adult at home to let the technician in.
Formosan termites are reported in Dallas County, but there is no basis for saying any particular DeSoto neighborhood has them. Most local termite work involves eastern subterranean termites. Only an inspection can tell which species is in your house.
